Travis began his musical career in the late 1970s, singing and playing guitar in a country band called Flash. In 1984, he was signed to Warner Bros. Records, where he began recording his debut album, Storms of Life. The album was released the following year and was a commercial success, selling more than four million copies. It was certified platinum and produced four number one singles on the Billboard country music charts.

Travis's success continued with the release of his second album, Always & Forever. The album's first single, "On the Other Hand," was a number one hit on the country charts.
